Bar Etiquette 101: Drinking Tips for a Night Out in Fishtown

Fabrika·September 8, 2026·2 min read
A Few Drinking Rules That You Will Need To Keep In Mind

A bar is one of the easiest places to have a good night — but a few small habits separate the regulars from the people the bartender tries to avoid. None of this is complicated, but it makes the night smoother for you, your group, and everyone else at the bar.

Know How to Order

Have your order ready before you get the bartender’s attention — nothing slows down a busy bar like someone still deciding when it’s finally their turn. Make eye contact, a small nod or a raised hand works fine, and there’s no need to wave or shout. If you’re not sure what to get, Fabrika’s cocktail menu has plenty to point at. If you’re ordering for a group, know everyone’s order in advance so you’re not making three trips back to ask.

Buying Rounds

If you’re out with a group, buying a round is one of those unwritten rules that keeps the night fair — you don’t have to do it every time, but if someone’s bought for you, it’s good form to return the favor at some point in the night.

Tipping and Tabs

A dollar or two per drink is standard if you’re paying as you go; if you open a tab, tipping around 15–20% of the total when you close out is the norm. Speaking of which — always close your tab before you leave. It’s an easy thing to forget after a few drinks, and it saves everyone a headache later.

Dress the Part

Just because it’s a bar doesn’t mean anything goes. You don’t need to overdress, but putting in a little effort — a clean, put-together casual or evening look — goes a long way, especially somewhere with a bit more atmosphere than your average dive.

A Few Nice Touches

A couple of small habits that aren’t strictly required, but go over well: if you’re drinking wine, let the glass be poured about a third full rather than to the top — it’s how you’re meant to actually taste it, not just drink it fast. Worth checking the wine list ahead of time if you know you’ll be picky about what’s poured. And if you’re on a date, it’s a nice touch to let the server pour for both of you rather than jumping in yourself.

If you’re looking for a bar with a bit more going on — live shows and a dance floor along with the drinks — Fabrika in Fishtown is worth checking out. See what’s on this week before you head out.
